Choosing the right type of thread for sewing leather goods is essential to ensure the durability and aesthetics of the final product.
Leather thread is a specialized type of thread designed for use in leatherworking. It is typically stronger and more durable than regular sewing thread, making it suitable for stitching leather pieces together.
Leather thread comes in various materials such as polyester or nylon, and its thickness can vary based on the project’s requirements. It is often treated or coated with wax for added strength and resistance to moisture, providing a smooth and reliable stitching experience in leathercraft. When it comes to choosing thread for sewing leather goods, not all thread is created equally.
My preferred thread is Ritza Tiger thread, which is a polyester 16 ply braided and waxed thread that is produced in Germany by Julius Koch. Their motto “When it has to last: Special sewing threads for special requirements” says it all! Not only is it UV resistant, but it is durable and has a high breaking strength. The wax on the thread helps to bind the stitch together when hand sewing, keeping the thread tight, and helps to protect the thread from the elements. When hand-sewing, Ritza Tiger Thread will lie flat against the leather, allowing for even more durability. It is the preferred thread by many leatherworkers.
I use the 0.8mm exclusively, and due to its thickness it is only used when hand sewing – one of the reasons my products will last a very long time. The thicker thread also adds to the rugged look of my leather goods.
Remember to consider the specific requirements of your project when choosing a thread for leather. The right thread can make all the difference in the longevity and visual appeal of your leather creations.
